Many people are aware that sex trafficking has been growing in Grand Rapids over the last few years. Many people have been targeted merely because they are not aware of the signs of sex trafficking. Some ways to combat sex trafficking are being aware of people following you, being aware of your surroundings, and not travelling to unknown places alone.

A common ploy is when someone tries to get a bag, tied around their windshield wipers, off their car. This tactic is used to get the victim to a specific area where a van is usually waiting to grab the victim. This has been an ongoing thing at the Meijer on 28th st. and in Comstock Park. There isn’t one specific target as men, women, girls, and boys have all equally been kidnapped.

As a native of Grand Rapids, I am sad to learn that this “trade” has been brought to Michigan and that there isn’t much that the Grand Rapids Police Department has done about it. I am also fearful for my family and friends that live in Grand Rapids.

Sex trafficking is a disgusting and inhumane thing that happens every day. Selling a human over and over again for money is a ridiculous and shameful act that shouldn’t take place at all. Anyone who illegally rips families apart and violates someone’s human rights should be punished heavily for being involved in this “trade.”

For everyone residing in the area, please be aware of the things that are taking place. Wherever you are, be sure to be safe because sex trafficking isn’t just limited to Grand Rapids.
