It all came down to the 10th of October for the United States, Panama, and Honduras to try to qualify for the 2018 Russia World Cup. It was Math day 12, the final games for the World Cup qualifiers. Mexico and Costa Rica were already qualified, and 2 spots were left for the automatic spot to book their ticket to the World Cup, and there was only one spot to play in the World Cup play off round against Australia.

The United States had to beat Trinidad & Tobago to get their automatic spot in this summer’s World Cup. Honduras had to beat Mexico. Panama had to win the game so that could get their spot. All three games started at the same time and all three games we intense. Both Mexico-Honduras and Costa Rica-Panama were tied, and United States was losing. In the 60th minute, Honduras scores and puts them on top 3-2 to Mexico, which puts the US in 4th place. That’s World Cup Playoffs. In the dying minutes of the Panama vs Costa Rica game, Roman Torres scored in the 88th minute and sent Panama to their first ever World Cup! This in turn sealed the fate for the US.

It was a dramatic Tuesday night, filled with happiness for both Honduras and Panama fans. But it send Americans heartbroken, frustrated, and disappointed that the United States failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986. The days after, many were showing their disappointment.

Taylor Twellman, a former US player, stated, “If the U.S soccer team can’t beat Costa Rica at home, and they can’t beat Trinidad on a wet field: we don’t deserve to go to the World Cup.”

The World Cup only happens every four years. It’s a month-long event which starts on June 14th and the finals takes place on July 15 in Moscow, Russia. All World Cup games will be hosted in multiple cities in Russia.
